A multinational telecommunications company
focused on both wireless and wireline telecommunications
is also engaged in software products development.
Key Problems
Several products of the company are usually
installed on the same machine. Names of
the variables are required in many different
contexts. This caused multiple problems
in cases when there was a name conflict
between different programs. There was neither
consistent convention for naming the variables,
nor a central place to distribute any recommendations.
When a new product was in development, the
programmers could never review the names
used in other products, so there was always
a danger of name conflicts. To prevent name
conflicts between different products and
to have a central source of naming recommendations,
it was decided to introduce a registry system.
Since this project was for the in-house
usage, limited means were allocated for
it. The solution offered by Arcadia,
Inc. fitted the budget boundaries.
Project Description
A Web-based registry system was developed
and installed on the corporate Intranet.
It provides the useful service at very little
overhead and bureaucracy effort. Developers
access the system via Web browsers. The
risk of name conflicts has been eliminated.
